NGU Swept by Lander in Long Afternoon

Tigerville, SC - North Greenville dropped a pair of close games to the Lander Bearcats with final scores of 4-0 and 7-6 at Jan McDonald Field. The second game lasted 11 innings, with the Bearcats able to hold on in the bottom of the inning for the win. Claire Gilmore collected 4 hits throughout the day including a game-tying home run. 

Game One - 4-0 LU

Callie Richards began the day on the mound for her fifth start of the season. After two scoreless innings, the Bearcats were first on the board with a sacrifice fly in the top of the 3rd. Lander would keep the North Greenville offense in check, and would add three insurance runs in the top of the 7th. The Crusaders would get two on base in the bottom of the inning, but would ultimately come up empty. Richards was charged with the loss.

Game Two - 7-6 LU

Elizabeth Engler took the mound to start the game, but would only last two thirds of the inning as the Bearcats scored three runs, two of those earned. NGU would respond, however, in the bottom of the inning when Brianna McRae connected for a two-RBI double down the left field line to cut the deficit to one run. The Crusaders tied the game back up in the bottom of the 2nd with an RBI double down the left field line by Brooklyn Stone. Lander would reclaim the lead with a run in the 3rd and an additional run in the 4th. The 5th and 6th innings would go scoreless. With one out in the 7th inning, Claire Gilmore came through for the Crusaders with a clutch two-run home run to tie the game at 5-5. After Lander scored a run in the top of the 8th, Taylor Koon would tie things right back up with an RBI single. After another two scoreless innings, the Bearcats reclaimed the lead in the top of the 11th with an RBI single to left field. With two runners on base and one out, LU went on to retire the final two batters to narrowly hang on for the win. Jaelin Griffin was the losing pitcher.

 

NGU will face the Cobras of Coker College on Saturday, February 29th in Tigerville.
