Whitehead Posts Four Hits In Doubleheader Sweep Of Queens

Tigerville, SC - North Greenville took care of business this afternoon at Ray & Bea Dillard field, sweeping the Royal of Queens University in a doubleheader with final score of 4-3 and 11-2. Timely hits as well as some costly errors by the Royals allowed the Crusaders to walk off in game one and pull away in game two. Jeremy Whitehead had a solid day, recording 4 hits including a double and an RBI. Anthony Hopkins recorded his first win in his first appearance of the season while Ryan Kirk earned his second win.

Game One - 4-3 NGU

Jared Lemcke took the mound for his first start of the season. He pitched a three up, three down 1st inning. After two scoreless innings, North Greenville would strike first in the bottom of the 3rd when Doug Angeli connected for a two-run homer to center field to put the Crusaders up. Queens would respond in the top of the 4th with a run scored due to a throwing error.  A sacrifice fly by Brady Smith in the bottom of the 5th put North Greenville back up by two runs, but the Royals would even things up in the top of the 6th with an RBI single followed by an RBI fielder's choice. With one out in the bottom of the 7th, Angeli doubled to right center to get in scoring position for John Michael Faile. Faile's at bat would wind up scoring the winning run due to a throwing error that allowed Angeli to score. Ryan Kirk took the win.

Game Two - 11-2 NGU

Anthony Hopkins took the mount to begin the second game, pitching 2.0 innings in a limited start. NGU made quick work of things in the bottom of the 1st. An RBI triple by Gehrig Octavio scored Jeremy Whitehead to put the Crusaders on the board. A walk by Faile was followed by a sacrifice fly by Jordan Holladay. Ageli would score the third run with an RBI groundout. Queens was able to get on the board in the top of the 2nd due to a wild pitch. After a scoreless 3rd inning, the Royals would string together a run by way of an RBI single. The Crusaders came to life in the bottom of the 5th with some help from Queens. Seven runs, all unearned, would score after a throwing error extended the inning. An RBI double by Cory Bivins, RBI singles by Angeli and Whitehead, and several wild pitched contributed to the big inning. North Greenville would add a few insurance runs in the bottom of the 6th with a two-run double by Aaron Adams. Brady Smith made his first appearance of the season in the 7th, pitching a scoreless inning. Anthony Hopkins recorded the win.

 

North Greenville would return to action tomorrow against the Trojans of Anderson University in Tigerville.
