Box Score The North Greenville Crusaders improved to 2-0 in conference play with a 3-1 victory over the Flying Fleet of Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina. The win was head coach Dr. Fred Battenfield's one hundredth career victory, dating back to his tenure at UTSA from 1984 to 1986. NGU took the opening set, dropped the second, then responded with sets three and four. Brandon Baker put together a solid match, posting 15 kills, 32 total attacks, 3 blocks, and 4 service aces.
Set one was the most competitive of the match, featuring fourteen ties. Trailing by two, the Crusaders were the first to pull away with a 6-2 run to lead 18-16. Erskine would come back to tie it, but NGU would end the set with a 6-2 run to win it 25-21.
Erskine would get off to a strong start in set two, starting things with a 5-2 run. Leading by three, Erskine would eventually end any doubt by going on a 10-2 run to take a 20-9 lead. The Crusaders would fight to close the gap, but the Flying Fleet would take the set without much of an issue, winning it 25-16.
North Greenville quickly recovered to begin set three, going on an 8-3 run. EC was able to close the deficit to one, but the Crusaders would respond to end the set with eight points in a row to take the third set 25-16.
Set four proved to be a nonissue for NGU. After starting the set with a 9-3 run, the two teams would go back and forth, allowing North Greenville to hang onto the lead. Leading by four, the Crusaders once again closed out the set strong, posting a 5-1 run to end the set and the match, winning the final set 25-17.
NGU will head to Gaffney, South Carolina to take on the Limestone Saints on Tuesday, February 4th.
