First Half Deficit Too Much to Overcome as NGU Falls to Wingate

Tigerville, SC – In the midst of their vigorous schedule the Crusaders found themselves matched up against the Bulldogs from Wingate University on a cold and rainy Thursday afternoon. The Crusaders battled valiantly scoring a near season high nine goals but fell short dropping the contest 9 – 16. Goalie, Sydney Taylor (Senior) had an outstanding game as she commanded her defense and collected 10 saves on the afternoon. Rachel Kellogg (Junior) was the other standout for the Crusaders as she scored five goals off a .500 percent shooting afternoon.

In the first half, the Bulldogs jumped out to a three-goal lead before Kellogg dashed down the field and sliced through Wingate’s defense scoring at the 22:48 remaining mark. Eight out of the nine goals for the Crusaders came unassisted on the afternoon as the Crusaders individual effort was outstanding. After Kellogg’s first goal the Crusaders and Bulldogs traded goals back-and-forth for nearly ten minutes. Hanna Hawkins (Senior) and Brenis Napoli (Junior) got in on the scoring action as they worked tremendously hard with the ball to secure the goals. The end of the first half came to a close as the Bulldogs put together a four-goal run. Although, the Crusaders posted a -4 in the turnover column North Greenville hurt themselves by not finishing shots and turning over the ball at key moments in the game.

The second half was all about the depth of Wingate taking over and out running the Crusaders. After Wingate finished a two-goal run Kellogg again slashed her way through the heart of the Bulldog defense and scored once again to give North Greenville a spark of life. Kellogg again scored at the 15:57 remaining mark to bring the Crusaders their fifth goal. North Greenville scored four of the last five goals of the contest. Maegan Easler (Freshman) started the run by scoring off an assist from Olivia Foltz (Freshman). Kellogg scored two more times in the last five minutes of the game followed up by a goal from Jillian Chiesa (Junior) that ended the game. At the end of the game the Bulldogs defeated the Crusaders 9 – 16.

Individually, Sidney Taylor had an outstanding game as a leader commanding her young defensive core. She also collected 10 saves on the afternoon. Rachel Kellogg scored 5 goals on the afternoon.

The Crusaders now head out on their Spring Break road trip as they play four consecutive road games. Throughout the next two week the Crusaders take on Chowan, Emmanuel, Lees-McRae, and Erskine. North Greenville with return home on Friday, March 22nd as they will host Converse College at 6 pm.
