North Greenville upended by Charleston (WV)

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville suffered a non-conference loss to the University of Charleston (WV) on Monday, falling 3-1 to the Eagles.

The Crusaders dropped the first two sets as the Eagles earned wins of 25-19 and 25-23, putting NGU in an early 2-0 hole. North Greenville struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive side o he net, hitting .036 in the opening frame. The Crusaders turned in their best set of the night in frame two, hitting .261 with 10-kills and 4-errors.

Matthew McManaway led the team with 12-kills while Aaron Campbell turned in 11. Jake Boldog dished out 17-assists. NGU struggled from the service line with 16 service errors. Kyle Brandt and Alexander Schinzing led the team with three service aces each. North Greenville turned in a solid performance on defense with 21 assisted blocks, led by McManaway who had seven. Four other players finished with three each.

North Greenville led 17-13 in set two when a Matthew McManaway kill extended NGU’s lead to four points. The Eagles stormed back late in the match though to tie the score at 24-24, forcing extra volleyball. Points were traded the next few serves before the Crusaders gained a 28-27 lead on a Charleston attack error. The crusaders would be the beneficiaries of another error from the Eagles to earn the 29-27 win.

Set four also went into extra sets ad NGU fought back to even the score at 24-24 with an Aaron Campbell kill. After trading points, the Eagles would capitalize, getting another service error and an attack error from the Crusaders to take the 27-25 win.

North Greenville fell to 8-12 on the season after Monday’s loss. The Crusaders will host Mount Olive University on March 24th at 7pm.
