Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville Matthew McManaway pounded out 17-kills on Tuesday night leading North Greenville to a 3-1 win over Erskine College.

The win over the Flying Fleet snapped a two game losing skid for the Crusaders and improved the team to 5-5 in Conference Carolinas play. Grayson Lawrence joined McManaway with double-digit kills, finishing with 10 on the night. Alexander Schinzing dished out 47-assists to help NGU’s winning effort.

Defensively, the Crusaders were led by Aaron Campbell who finished the night with 15-digs. Kyle Brandt added 11-digs while Dustin King had 10. The Crusaders had three solo blocks and a pair of assisted stops.

After dropping the first set 25-22, the Crusaders opened the second on a 5-2 tear, powered by a pair of kills from Matthew McManaway and Kyle Brandt and the help of a pair of errors from the Fleet, the Crusaders extended their lead to 9-2.

The Flying fleet pulled to within five of NGU before the Crusaders went on a 4-1 run with the help of three Erskine errors to re-extend the lead to eight points. The Crusaders continued to plug away at the Fleet before a kill from Ben Hamsho won the set, 25-17.

The third set took a little more work but the Crusaders led 15-10 after a McManaway kill and a service error from Erskine. An NGU attack error would make things even more interesting late in the frame as it made the score 19-18 in favor of the visiting Crusaders. NGU answered the challenge with back-to-back kills to extend the lead the three-points.

Erskine continued to scratch at the deficit, cutting it to two points with an NGU error, and then one point with a kill from Isaac Lannier. NGU got the set’s winning point on an error from the Fleet, earning the 25-23 win.

The Crusaders continued the night’s tradition of fast starts in the fourth set. NGU once again put the pressure on Erskine, jumping out to a 10-4 advantage. Three different players had kills during the run as NGU looked to put the game away in four. Erskine cut it to four points at 16-12 but North Greenville answered with a 3-1 run powered by a McManaway kill to take a 19-12 lead.

North Greenville would lead by as many as nine-points in the frame before putting the game away with another Erskine error. The Fleet finished with 23-errors on the night. The home team hit just .150 as a team while North Greenville finished the night hitting .259 as a team.

North Greenville improved to 5-11 overall as a team. The Crusaders will host Emmanuel College on Thursday night with a 7pm first serve.
