Kennington's game winner lifts NGU to league playoffs

Spartanburg, S.C. – North Greenville women’s lacrosse tallied another win on Thursday night with a 9-8 victory over Converse College.

The Crusaders fell behind 3-1, early in the game but a goal from Emily Colson and Taylor Kennington would even the tally at 3-3. Kennington tallied two more goals to earn the first half hat trick as the two teams went into halftime tied at 5-5.

The Valkyries came out firing on all cylinders in the second half scoring the first three goals to take an 8-5 advantage. NGU’s defense would take over though, holding Converse scoreless for the remaining 18:04.

The NGU offense would feed on the defense’s momentum, picking up where Kennington left off in the first half. Hanna Hawkins would score the equalizer with 5:06 left in the game. Kennington’s fourth goal of the night would be the go-ahead goal, leaving 2:02 left on the clock.

The Valkyries fired one last shot as the clock expired but Sydney Taylor accounted for her 10th save of the game to give NGU the crucial win, locking up the program’s first trip to the Conference Carolinas playoffs.

Kennington led NGU with four goals on the night while Emily Colson and Hanna Hawkins both tallied two. Rebecca Bagwell also scored for the Crusaders. Colson and Bagwell also had an assist. North Greenville finished with 18 shots on goal.

 

North Greenville will wrap up the regular season on Saturday afternoon against Belmont Abbey at 12pm.
