Tigerville, S.C.—Led by a group of seniors, the North
Greenville baseball team wrapped up the home portion of its 2012 regular season
on Tuesday with an impressive 19-9 showing against Brevard College.
Markus Duckworth and Derek Fulmer led the way for NGU with 4
hits a piece. Duckworth was 4-4 with 2 RBI and 3 runs scored while Fulmer was
4-6 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. Fulmer also added 3 doubles to his season
total.
The Crusaders pounced on Brevard pitching early scored 2
runs, in the first inning. Derek Fulmer’s first double led to an NGU run when
Adam Taylor scored from second base. Senior Davis Frazier also platted a run
for the Crusaders with an RBI single. Frazier finished the day going 3-5 with 3
RBI.
Brevard evened the sore at 2 in the top of the 2nd
inning with 2 runs on 2 hits. Back
to back hits by Brevard, a leadoff single from Tarron Robinson, and a double
from Cody Queen would put runners in scoring position for the Tornados with 0
outs. Randy O’Dell’s sacrifice fly to center field would plate the first run
for Brevard and move Queen to third. Queen would later score on a ground out to
2nd.
Brevard would take its only lead of the game in the 4th
inning after scoring a solo run. Chad Funkhouser, who reached base on a leadoff
single, would later come around to score on a leadoff single.
The flood gates would open on Brevard in the bottom half of
the 4th inning after the Crusaders cashed in 7 runs on 5 hits and a
Tornado error. Taylor Hollifield’s leadoff single would spark the rally. Markus
Duckworth would follow Hollifield’s single with a run scoring double. Dylan
Fulk, who also started on the mound for NGU would help his own cause with an
RBI single, scoring Duckworth from 3rd base to help NGU regain a 4-3
lead. The Crusaders would also pickup RBI’s from Derek Fulmer, Allen Staton,
Andrew Lawrence, and Anthony Foulk to push their lead to 9-3.
The Crusaders would score 2 more runs in the 5th
inning to take an 11-3 lead before Brevard cut into the deficit. The Tornados
would score 2 runs in the 6th inning on 2 hits. Randy O’Dell cashed
in 1 Brevard run on an RBI single, and Troy Marlowe picked up another with a
bases loaded walk.
The steady handed Crusaders answered with 7 more runs in the
7th. Adam Taylor’s double started the scoring for the Crusaders
scoring Markus Duckworth and Dylan Fulk. Andrew Lawrence would also pickup 2
runs on an RBI single with 2 outs. NGU would score 1 more run in the 8th,
and the Tornado would threaten in the 9th, but scored just 3 runs to
wrap up the 2012 regular season home schedule for NGU.
Dylan Fulk picked up the win for the Crusaders in his first
start of the season. Fulk pitched 5 innings and gave up 5 runs on 8 hits. He
helped his own cause offensively with a 2-6 performance at the plate. He also
scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI.
Senior David Frazier was 3-5 at the plate with 3 RBI and 2
runs scored and senior Anthony Foulk was 1-5 with a run scored and an RBI. Freshman
Allen Staton continued his impressive debut campaign with a 3-5 showing. Staton
scored 2 runs and picked up an RBI.
The Crusaders will wrap up the 2012 regular season this
weekend with a 3 game set against conference leading Mount Olive College. The
Crusaders and Trojans will open the series on Friday evening at 6pm. The
Crusaders need 1 win in their final 3 games to secure a spot in the Conference
Carolinas tournament. NGU can also secure a spot in the post season with a
Coker loss to Barton.
