Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville baseball team extended
its winning streak to 4 games Wednesday afternoon, powering past the Warriors
of Southern Wesleyan University 20-5 in midweek baseball action at Ashmore
Field.
The Crusaders turned in their best offensive performance of
the season Tuesday, cashing in 20 runs on 18 hits, including a 1st
inning grand slam from David Frazier, and a two run blast from Adam Taylor in
the 6th.
On the mound, Griffin Spires collected his second win in as
many starts allowing 3 runs on 7 hits, in 6 innings of work. Spires allowed two
free passes but struck out four.
The Crusaders set the furious pace for Wednesday’s game when
David Frazier dinged a towering grand slam over the right field fence. It was
Frazier’s second homer of the season, and it gave the Crusaders a quick 4-0
lead. Marcus Duckworth would collect his only RBI of the game later in the
inning on a single up the middle, scoring Allen Staton from 3rd.
The Crusaders added another big inning in the 2nd,
scoring six runs on three hits. North Greenville tallied a hit in 7 of 9
innings Wednesday, while piling on 1 run in the 4th, 3 in the 6th,
including Adam Taylor’s two run shot, his second of the season, and 5 runs in
the 8th.
North Greenville is now 8-0 against Southern Wesleyan,
dating back to 2010. Leading the offensive charge for NGU was Andrew Lawrence.
At the plate, Lawrence was 3for4 with a walk and two runs scored with an RBI
for the Crusaders. Allen Staton, NGU’s freshman second baseman once again
handed in a solid performance at the dish, going 3for5 with two runs scored and
two RBIs.
DH Frank Polino also posted a multi-hit game going 2for4
with 2 runs scored and an RBI, along with Taylor Hollifield who was 2for5 with
an RBI and a run scored.
The 20 runs and 18 hits is the best output this season for
the Crusaders, heading into their second weekend series of the season, against
Montreat. The Crusaders and Cavaliers are scheduled for a Saturday
double-header in Montreat, North Carolina. First pitch is scheduled for 12pm.
