Rome, GA – North Greenville overcame a slow start and a late Shorter comeback on Saturday to finish the regular season undefeated in Conference Carolinas play with a 35-33 win over the Hawks.
The Trailblazers fell behind 13 – 0 in the first quarter after turning the ball over on their first two drives. The Hawks held North Greenville scoreless in the first quarter. North Greenville responded with three touchdowns in the second quarter to take a halftime lead.
Dylan Ramirez would throw for three touchdowns in the second frame, hooking up with
Khristian Means from 25 – yards out and with
Ahmari Coats on a 41 – yard strike.
Eric Rasheed would also catch a scoring pass from Ramirez to make it 21 – 20 at intermission.
North Greenville looked to have the game in hand scoring the next two touchdowns to extend its lead by two touchdowns heading to the fourth quarter.
Reggion Bennett would score on a two-yard rush while Ramirez would find Brecken Kirby for his first receiving touchdown to extend the lead to 35 – 20. The upset minded Hawks crept back in to contention however, scoring twice in the final six minutes. Shorter's attempted two point conversion would fall short on its final score to keep NGU in front with 3:59 left in the game.
The Trailblazers would run the clock down to a minute before punting back to Shorter. The Hawks would drive to the NGU 44 – yard line but a 61 – yard field goal attempt would come up well short as NGU escaped with the win.
Ramirez finished with 375 – yards on 29 – completions and four touchdowns in the winning effort. He also ran for another 68 – yards.
Eric Rasheed led all receivers with 147 – yards on eight receptions and a score.
Jackson Sims led the Trailblazers with 11 – tackles.
