Defense pitches second half shutout; Crusaders top Newberry

Box Score Newberry – North Greenville accomplished its only done once before on Saturday, beating Newberry College on the road. The Crusaders used three first half scores and big defensive stops in the second half to earn the 24-14 non-conference win over the Wolves.

Recap 

  • The opening drive for both North Greenville and Newberry ended in punts while the second drive for each team ended in interceptions for both quarterbacks. 
  • Aaron Watson picked off his first pass of the season to end Newberry's second drive. 
  • The Crusaders capitalized on the extra possession, driving 65-yards in 10-plays. Kaelan Riley capped off the march with a three-yard touchdown pass to Josh Edwards to make it 7-0 in the first quarter. 
  • Both offenses had a big second quarter with a pair of scores each on the board. NGU turned in the longest touchdown of the night when Riley hooked up with Dre Williams from 40-yards out. 
  • The Riley to Williams touchdown came on the heels of a blocked field goal, the third blocked kick of the year for North Greenville special teams. 
  • North Greenville tacked on one more score before the end of the half, a third touchdown throw for Riley, this time finding Christian Bruce for a score. It was Bruce's first score of the season and made it 21-7. 
  • The Wolves added a touchdown before the halftime buzzer to cut the North Greenville lead to 21-14. 
  • The defenses clamped down in the third and fourth quarters. The only points of the second half came in the form of a field goal by NGU when Colin Karhu knocked through a kick to make it 24-14. 
  • NGU was able to hold the Newberry rushing attack to just 33 yards total in the third and fourth quarters while allowing just three third down conversions during that time.  

Individual 

  • Kaelan Riley threw for 295-yards and three touchdowns. He connected with three different receivers for scores. 
  • Dre Williams was the leading receiver for both teams, catching 11 passes for 181-yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 57-yards. 
  • RJ Wooten led North Greenville tacklers with six total stops on the day with one tackle for a loss. 
  • Cameron Payne had five total tackles including one stop for a loss. Aaron Watson accounted for an interception. 
  • North Greenville finished with 393-yards of total offense.  

Next Time Out 

  • The Crusaders head to Charleston to take on Division I Citadel next Saturday at 6 PM.
