4th Quarter Struggles Costly in Loss to King

Box Score Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders suffered a tough defeat to the Tornado of King University with a final score of 65-62 at Hayes Gymnasium. NGU dominated the majority of the game, outscoring the Tornado in three of the four quarters and led by as much as 23. However, NGU would go ice cold in the 4th quarter, allowing King to claim the lead and hang on for the win. Peace Okeke posted a double-double while Savannah Hughes led in points.

Recap
  • The Crusaders scored the opening points of the game by way of a three pointer by Savannah Hughes. A 12-3 run throughout the quarter allowed NGU to jump out to a 15-5 lead. King would hit two threes late in the quarter to pull back within four, making the score 15-11 at the end of the 1st quarter.
  • Once again, North Greenville was able to get off to a good start in the 2nd quarter, scoring the first eleven points including two layups by Peace Okeke. King would post just one made field goal in the quarter, but six free throws gave them a total of eight points scored in the quarter. NGU was much more successful, scoring a total of twenty points in the quarter to make the score 35-19 at halftime.
  • Both teams would score five point runs early on in the 3rd quarter. After North Greenville took a 23 point lead, the largest of the game, the Tornado began to show signs of life with an 8-2 run to end the quarter.
  • King would continue to carry the momentum into the 4th quarter while the Crusaders went ice cold from the field. Down by 17 at the beginning of the 4th, the Tornado would record a 13-1 run to cut their deficit down to five points. Savannah Hughes and Peace Okeke would temporarily stop the bleeding with layups to jump back ahead by nine. However, the Tornado would go on yet another run, scoring 14 in a row to take a five point lead. Now trailing by five, Savannah Hughes would hit a clutch three pointer with 14 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to two. After a free throw by King, the Crusaders would get a the game-tying shot off, but it would bounce off the rim to allow the Tornado to hang on for the win.

  • Peace Okeke posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds. She also recorded 3 assists.
  • Savannah Hughes led the Crusaders in points with 17 while also providing 2 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
  • Haylee Luttrell also hit double digits, scoring 11 points and recording 6 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal.
