Crusaders Edge Hawks to Sweep Opening Weekend

Box Score Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville Crusaders are officially 2-0 for the first time since the 2008-09 season with a 76-73 victory over the Chowan Hawks this afternoon at Hayes Gymnasium. Twelve different lead changes resulted in a highly competitive matchup, but the Crusaders were able to finish the game on top. Journey Muhammed put together a 21 point performance.

Recap
  • Chowan started things off with a three pointer, but the Crusaders quickly responded with nine straight points. The Hawks would go cold for the majority of the quarter, allowing the Crusaders to pull ahead by ten when a late three pointer by CU made the score 16-9 after one quarter.
  • Once again, Chowan began the second quarter with the momentum, scoring thirteen of the next fifteen points to take a 22-18 lead. However, four straight points by Haylee Luttrell by way of a jumper and two free throws tied the score at 22-22. After a layup by Savannah Hughes to put NGU back up, nearly three minutes would pass without a score. Kira Bell would finally put an end to the drought with two free throws. Chowan would end the half with four free throws to tie things once again at the half with a score of 26-26.
  • After a back and forth start to the second half, a three pointer and a layup by the Hawks resulted in a six point lead. Journey Muhammed would respond with six points of her own with two three pointers to tie the score at 41-41. Neither team would lead by more than three for the remainder of the quarter. Chowan scored the final basket, but the Crusaders would hold a one point lead heading to the 4th quarter.
  • After giving up the lead, the Crusaders would pull back ahead with a 7-0 run to lead 60-54. The Hawks would pull within one, but NGU once again took the momentum back with eight straight points to lead by nine with just over two minutes remaining. Chowan wouldn't go down without a fight, pulling within three. However, North Greenville would hang on to take a 76-73 victory.
Individual
  • Journey Muhammed led NGU with 21 points. She also contributed in other ways with 3 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
  • Peace Okeke posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She also recorded 2 blocks and 2 steals.
  • Savannah Hughes also scored 14 points while posting 3 rebounds and 2 steals.

  • NGU will head to Mount Olive, North Carolina to take on the Trojans on Friday, January 22nd with a scheduled time of 5:00 PM.
