North Greenville Suffers Heartbreaking Loss to Chowan to Open Up Season

Box Score Tigerville, SC - The North Greenville men's basketball team suffered a heartbreaking 79-77 to the Chowan Hawks at Hayes Gymnasium on Friday night. NGU led by as much as 22 nearly halfway into the 2nd half, but a big momentum swing resulted in the Hawks getting back into the game and eventually taking a last-second lead to stun the Crusaders. Jalon Cokley started off his season on a great note, scoring 24 points.

  • After trailing 4-2 very early, the Crusaders would go on a tear, scoring the next 20 points including 8 straight points by Jalon Cokley to take a commanding 22-4 lead. The Hawks were able to finally get some offense going, keeping their deficit under 20 points for the remainder of the half. However, Cokley would continue to produce in the half, keeping NGU ahead by a comfortable amount. The half would end with the Crusaders leading 49-30. North Greenville ended the half with a 52.63 field goal percentage.
  • The second half began with the Hawks gaining some momentum, posting a 9-3 run. However, the Crusaders responded with a nine point run to get ahead by 22 points. Down by 20 with 11:08 remaining, Chowan would take over, putting together a 24-5 run in a span of less than ten minutes to trail by just one. NGU did respond with 5 straight points including a layup and a free throw by C.J. Jamison. After a turnover with less than 20 seconds remaining, a fast break layup would tie the game at 77-77. Another turnover would result in the Hawks capitalizing, scoring the game-winning basket to win the game 79-77.
