Box Score The North Greenville Crusaders suffered a 64-61 overtime loss to the King Tornado in Bristol, Tennessee. Both teams struggled from three point range, with NGU shooting 29.2% and King shooting just 14.3% from behind the arc. The Crusaders took an eight point lead in the 3rd quarter but would go over ten minutes without a point in the 4th quarter and overtime to allow King to end the game with the lead. Savannah Hughes led the Crusaders with 16 points while Karen Donehew posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
After a quick layup by Peace Okeke gave the Crusaders a 2-0 lead, King would follow with an 8-0 run. After a layup by Savannah Hughes, NGU would go without a point for over two minutes. Trailing 13-6 with 2:39 left in the quarter, the Crusaders wrapped the quarter up with eight consecutive points to take a 14-13 lead.
King began the second quarter with a layup to reclaim the lead early on in the quarter. Both teams would go scoreless for nearly two minutes, but the Tornado would end the drought with the first three pointer of the game. Journey Muhammed would follow that up with NGU's first three pointer. With 1:34 remaining in the half, King took a five point lead, the largest of the half. However, Journey Muhammed closed out the half with a three pointer to cut the deficit to two points at halftime.
The Tornado took the opening points to begin the third quarter, but the Crusaders reponded and eventually tied the game at 31-31. A free throw by Haylee Luttrell would give North Greenville the lead for the first time since the opening points in the 1st quarter. NGU would lead by as much as eight. King closed the gap with a five point run, but Muhammed again closed out the quarter with a three pointer to give the Crusaders a four point lead.
Nearly a minute and a half went by without a point to begin the 4th quarter. King scored to end the drought, but North Greenville would then pull away with a six point run to lead 49-41 with 6:17 left in the game. However, the Crusaders would go ice cold and would not score a point for the remainder of regulation. The Tornado would come back to tie the game but could not score the winning basket, forcing overtime.
KU would continue their run, scoring the opening eight points to begin overtime. Over ten minutes since their last point, the Crusaders would finally put an end to the long scoring drought with a three pointer by Karen Donehew. Donehew and Savannah Hughes would collectively score the final twelve of NGU's points, but free throws by the Tornado allowed them to hang on for the win.
The Crusaders will return to Tigerville for a three game home stretch, starting with the University of Mount Olive Trojans on Saturday, January 18th.
