North Greenville Falls to Catawba in Season Debut

The North Greenville Crusaders opened up the 2019-20 season with a 74-42 loss to the Indians of Catawba College in Newberry, South Carolina. The score remained close after the first quarter, but the game fell out of reach when NGU managed just four points in the second quarter. For the game, the Crusaders shot 26.9% from the field. Savannah Hughes started off strong with 16 points.

Catawba jumped out to an early 7-2 lead, but NGU quickly returned the favor to tie things up at 9-9. From there, the Indians would dominate the remainder of the quarter, ending it with a 9-2 run to lead 18-11. Damiya Montgomery would score the first points of the second quarter and soon after converted another jumpshot, but that would be all for the Crusaders as they would not score another point for the final eight minutes of the half, allowing Catawba to put the game out of reach with a 40-15 lead at halftime.

After a five point run by Catawba to begin the second half, NGU came to life with a five point run of their own. Catawba would spend the next several minutes opening their lead back up to thirty, but North Greenville would strike back with the final six points of the quarter to make the score 59-33. The fourth quarter began without a point scoring for over two minutes, but the Indians put an end to that with a layup. With just over five minutes remaining, Savannah Hughes scored NGU's first points of the quarter with a layup. Karen Donehew followed that up with a three pointer. Catawba would close out the game with the final three points to win by 32.

North Greenville will return to action tomorrow in Newberry, SC when they face the Newberry Wolves as a part of the SAC/Conference Carolinas Challenge.
