North Greenville downs SWU for second straight league win

Box Score

Central, S.C. – North Greenville overcame a cold shooting performance from the floor and the free-throw line on Saturday to down the Southern Wesleyan Warriors 68-66, the team’s second league win in a row.

Neither team could get much going on offense as the Crusaders shot just 37.5-percent compared to just over 36-percent for the Warriors. North Greenville also struggled at the charity stripe hitting just 12 of its 20 free throws. The Crusaders did most of their damage from three-point range, as they were eight of 18 from deep.

North Greenville led by five points with just 33-seconds left in the game but a few untimely fouls allowed the Warriors to work their way back into contention. SWU took six free throws in the final 30-seconds of Saturday’s game and pulled to within one point of the Crusaders. Kyli Schmidt would split a pair of free throws on NGU’s final offensive possession to give NGU a 68-66 lead.

The Warriors would get the last look of the game, but a missed jumper by Cayse Brannon would fall harmlessly to the floor as the clock ran out. The Crusaders improved to 6-10 overall and 3-7 in league player after the win over Southern Wesleyan. It is the first two games win streak in Conference Carolinas play for the Crusaders.

North Greenville had three-players in double figures including Cameron Carter who led the team with 14-points but Kyli Schmidt and Jessica Garlington provided an offensive lift for NGU off of the bench as each scored 12-points. Karen Donehew led NGU with nine rebounds to go along with seven assists.

The Crusaders will travel to Banner Elk, North Carolina on January 24th to take on Lees-McRae at 5:30pm.
