Tigerville, S.C.—The North Greenville women’s basketball
team chalked its second straight win and eighth win overall on Wednesday after
a convincing 92-61 triumph over the Flying Fleet of Erskine College.
The Crusaders enjoyed balanced scoring with four players in
double-figures. Tyler Powers led the charge with 20 points, going 6-14 from
beyond the three-point arch. Alisha Hope registered 17 points on 6-11 shooting
while also collecting three steals. Timisty Nelson accounted for NGU’s only double
double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Ashleigh Edwards scored 14 from the
point.
Erskine would take an early two-point lead, but North
Greenville responded quickly with a Landrie Fox free throw and a three-pointer
from Ashleigh Edwards to take a 4-2 advantage. NGU would never trail again, but
struggled to put the Fleet away in the first half. NGU led by as many as eight
points in the opening frame, but Erskine battled back each time NGU would make
a run, keeping the game close. The Crusaders, who shot just 27.7% in the led by
just one point at intermission.
NGU continued
to challenge the fleet in the second half, and pushed the lead to double digits
twice in the first five minutes of play, but the Fleet continued to battle and
cut the lead to nine. NGU would begin to pull away, midway through the second
frame, after going on an 8-1 run to take a 56-39 lead. Erskine would go on to
shoot just 25% in the second half, as the Crusaders jogged to a 31-point
victory, their largest margin of victory on the season.
The Fleet had just two players in double figures including
Tara Potter who scored 16. Jana Dixon scored 12 points while collecting 10
rebounds for a double double. Haleigh Spalding was next in line with 9 points.
The Fleet fell to 2-21 on the season, and 1-16 in Conference Carolinas play.
Both teams struggled offensively Wednesday. The Fleet shot
just 31.1%. North Greenville gained a slight edge shooting at 39% clip. North
Greenville dominated the paint collecting 54 rebounds while scoring 24 at the
basket. NGU’s bench outscored Erskine’s bench 25-9 while turning 21 Flying
Fleet turnovers into 23 points. The Crusaders also took advantage of their
transition game scoring 17 fast break points.
The Crusaders have now won five of their last eight games, including
tonight’s win over Erskine. The Crusaders are now 8-13 on the season and 6-11
in league play. North Greenville remains in the hunt for the final playoff
spot, sitting just two wins behind the King University Tornado. NGU will look
to inch closer to King on February 16th, when the Crusaders take on
Belmont Abbey at 5:30 in Belmont, North Carolina.
