Greenwood, S.C.—The North Greenville volleyball team secured
one of the biggest wins in program history on Tuesday night as the Crusaders
upended the Lander Bearcats 3-2 (15-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-21, 15-12) for the
first time in NGU history.
The Crusaders were paced by junior Rebekah Mayes, who
pounded out 22 kills in the five set battle; Abigail Frame was steady in the
middle racking up 41 assists with 10 digs, while Megan Steading was a solid
presence with 15 digs. NGU’s defense was stellar totaling 20 block assists and
3 solo blocks.
The Crusaders put together their most solid performance of
the season on Tuesday en route to the history-making win, overcoming a 2-1
deficit to force a fifth set. The Crusaders found themselves down in the 4th
set 6-1 and 18-14 but clawed back to tie the game and the win. In the final set
of the day, NGU was once again in the hole 6-2 and 11-8, but each time fought
back. The Crusaders out scored the Bearcats 7-1 in the final points to secure
the triumph.
“This was a great win for our program on the road against
Lander, a team we’ve never beaten before. They are a great team and are very
well coached,” remarked head coach Greg Mosely. “To win in five sets on the
road would have been great victory regardless of the opponent.”
Coach Mosely attributes the win to great play from veteran
leaders and strong freshman play. “I’m proud of Abigail [Frame] and Rebekah [Mayes],
their great leaders on the floor and we got some great play from the freshmen,
and great play from Madison Allen who did a great job on the back row. This
was a quality win over a well coached team, and I’m proud of these ladies.”
The Crusaders will keep their travel bags packed for the
next few matches as they head to Gaffney for a Conference Carolinas showdown
with Limestone College on September 14, followed by a trip to
Banner Elk, North Carolina for another conference matchup with Lees-McCray on
the 15. The Crusaders will open the home portion of their schedule
on September 21 against Queens University of Charlotte.
