Crusaders Split Doubleheader, Win Series

Due West, S.C. - North Greenville split the day with the Flying Fleet of Erskine College, dropping Game 1 9-6 and winning Game 2 16-9. With the split, North Greenville won two out of three games to take the overall series. Jared Williams had quite a day with six hits and four runs scored. John Jones also had a strong day with five hits and five RBIs. Jared Lembcke received his first win of the year.

Game 1

The Basics

How it Happened

  • North Greenville fell behind early when Erskine scored a run in the 1st and three runs in the 2nd including a home run by Chaz Davey.
  • Connor Grant drove in NGU's first run in the top of the 3rd with a sacrifice fly to center field. Later in the inning, John Jones scored due to a throwing error.
  • The Flying Fleet added another run in the bottom of the 3rd with an RBI ground-rule double by Chase Watts.
  • North Greenville scored a run in the 4th due to a wild pitch that allowed Jared Williams to score.
  • After a scoreless 5th, Erskine would pull away in the 6th with four unearned runs. The Crusaders committed two errors in the inning.
  • NGU put up a fight in the 7th with three runs scored, but ultimately lost by three. The inning included a home run to center field by Jeffrey Chandler.

How it Happened

  • Both teams came out firing on all cylinders. North Greenville put ten runs on the board in the first four innings while Erskine put up nine. John Jones connected for a two-run home run in the 2nd. Billy Ryan hit a home run of his own in the 3rd inning.
  • Pitching began to take over with scoreless 5th and 6th innings.
  • Josh Black added to the NGU lead in the 7th with a 2-RBI single. John Jones brought in two additional runs in the inning with another 2-RBI single.
  • The Crusaders would cap off the day with two more runs in the 8th. Both runs were scored due to wild pitches.

  • John Jones went 3 for 5 with a home run and 4 RBIs.
  • Josh Black had a good day at the leadoff spot, collecting 3 hits, 4 RBIs, and 3 runs scored.
  • Jared Lembcke recorded his first win of the season. He pitched 2.2 innings in relief and allowed just 1 run off 2 hits.

Inside the Erskine Box Score

  • Kyle Heiss recorded 3 hits, an RBI, and 2 runs scored.
  • Trevor Wood was the only player for the Fleet to drive in multiple runs with 3 RBIs.
  • Will McSwain pitched just one inning in relief, but his 2 runs allowed made him responsible for the loss.
