North Greenville Wins Pitching Duel In Day One of Conference Series Against Erskine

Box Score

Tigerville, SC - A brilliant outing by starting pitcher Tucker Burgess and a home run by Clark Scolamiero led to a Crusader victory against Erskine Friday night. Both starting pitchers had strong performances and pitched complete games, but one run was all that was needed for NGU to take the win.

Burgess pitched nine innings and allowed six hits, no runs, and one walk while striking out nine. Erskine's starter, Michael Carpin, pitched eight innings allowing five hits, one earned run, and no walks while striking out six.

The first five innings went to the starting pitchers as only seven total hits were allowed in those innings.

North Greenville finally struck in the sixth with a solo shot by Scolamiero that bounced off the broadcast booth in right center field.

The Flying Fleet threatened in the top of the seventh. With runners on first and second, Destin Nichols hit a single to center field. William Ruby, who was on second as a pinch runner, attempted to score on the play when center fielder Scolamiero showed off his arm by throwing out Ruby at home with time to spare.

The eighth and ninth innings were easy ones for Burgess as only one hit would be allowed.

With the win, North Greenville improves to 24-11 overall and 10-6 in conference play. Erskine falls to 24-11 overall and 13-3 in conference play. The two teams return to action tomorrow with a scheduled start time of 12:00 PM.
