Greenville, S.C.—The winningest senior class in NGU baseball
history wrapped up a storied four years at North Greenville University on
Tuesday night with an 8-5 loss to Limestone College at Fluor Field in
Greenville.
The class of 2012 seniors finished as the winningest team in
North Greenville history with 123 wins in 4 years. They won the programs first
ever National Championship in 2010 and were runners up in the 2011 NCCAA World
Series. Before the 2010 season, no NGU baseball team had ever advanced to a
regional tournament.
On Tuesday night, senior ace Drew Provence took the mound in
his last appearance as a Crusader. On short rest, Provence pitched 5 innings
and gave up 4 runs on 7 hits. He struck out 4 batters and walked the same. He
will wrap up his career at NGU as the all-time leader in wins as a starter with
28, and ERA with a career mark of 3.48.
The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead against limestone
in the top of the 1st inning, with 2 run on 3 hits. Senior David
Frazier and Derek Fulmer provided the fire works for NGU with RBI’s. Fulmer,
who came a matter of feet from a home run blasted a triple off of the center
field wall which scored 1. Fulmer would later score on Frazier’s line drive
single to center.
In the fourth inning another senior, Anthony Foulk connected
with a 2-2 fastball and sent it into the left field gap scoring Andrew Lawrence
from 2nd base. The following inning, Markus Duckworth scored the
games 4th run on a single from Allen Staton. The Crusaders led 4-0
headed into the bottom of the 5th when Limestone tied the game. A
leadoff double for the Saints started a rally in which they would score 4 runs
on 4 hits.
The Saints would go on to score 4 more runs in the 8th
inning to take an 8-4 lead into the final frame. With 1 out, 2nd
baseman Taylor Hollifield inched the Crusaders closer with a monster homerun
over the “Green Monster” in left field, which pull North Greenville to within
3. The Crusaders hung around after a 2 out double from Frank Polino but the
Saints secured their only win of the season over North Greenville with a
groundout to short.
The Crusaders finished the 2012 season with an overall
record of 28-16 and a conference mark of 14-13.
