Trey Dyson

Trey Dyson joined the baseball coaching staff as the recruiting coordinator and hitting coach in 2020. The former South Carolina Gamecock also played professionally before entering a career in coaching as well as broadcasting. In his first season as hitting coach, NGU had an incredible offensive season hitting .351 as a team alongside a NCAA Division 2 record breaking OPS (on base plus slugging %) of 1.043. Nine players from North Greenville were named All-Conference Carolinas, with six of those being named for their achievements at the plate. In 47 games, the North Greenville offense produced 210 extra base hits and scored 499 runs (10.6 runs per game).

Prior to joining the Crusaders, Dyson entered the coaching world as a private hitting and pitching instructor in 2006 after retiring from professional baseball. He has been a part of multiple coaching staffs as an assistant coach, including Ben Lippen School in Columbia, SC, Blythewood High School in Blythewood, SC, and the Lexington County Blowfish, a Coastal Plains League team in Lexington, SC. In 2020, Trey was a head coach for the Bomb Island Bombers, a College Summer League team in Columbia, SC.

Dyson's voice may sound familiar to college baseball fans as he was a color analyst for the University of South Carolina baseball team from 2010-2018 on Fox Sports South as well as the SEC Network. He has worked with prominent voices in college baseball such as Mike Morgan and Dave Neal.

As a college athlete, Trey excelled both on and off the field. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from the University of South Carolina with a 3.77 GPA and was named the University of South Carolina's and the SEC's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2002. He played four years under the legendary college baseball coach Ray Tanner. On the field, Trey was a vital leader on and off the field for one of the best programs in the country. During his playing career at South Carolina, the Gamecocks won two SEC Championships in 2000 and 2002, hosted three regional tournaments, appeared in three super regionals (South Carolina v. ULL 2000, South Carolina @ Stanford 2001, South Carolina v. Miami 2002) and reached the National Championship game in the College World Series in 2002. Dyson received multiple awards throughout his collegiate career, including Newcomer of the Year (1998), Mr. Clutch Award (2000), the Fred Brinkman Award (2002), and 1st Team All-SEC (2002). He also made the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll in all four years of his collegiate career and was later named to the University of South Carolina All Decade Team.

As a professional player, Dyson was signed by the Kansas CIty Royals and began his professional career in Spokane Washington in the short-season Northwest League. He played with current MLB pitcher and Cy-young award winner Zack Greinke for two seasons. Dyson was involved in two MLB trades that saw him first traded to the Cleveland Indians in 2004, and later to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2005.  During the 2003 season, Dyson made the all star team as an OF/1b for the Wilmington Blue Sharks in the Kansas City Royals organization.

On the field, Dyson works with the hitters on a daily basis. He also works with infielders. In addition to being the recruiting coordinator, he also is the director of analytics and helps with coordinating camps.  Dyson is a talented hitting instructor with a high baseball IQ, who is passionate about winning and helping student-athletes succeed on and off the field.

Fun fact: During the 2002 college world series, Trey Dyson alongside teammate and current Crusaders Head Coach Landon Powell, both hit home runs against their arch rivals Clemson in a 12-4 victory.

Dyson loves God, family, and baseball. He has a loving wife of 15 years and two loving children (daughter and son).
