Trailblazers Earn Thrilling Road Win to Open up 2026

Tigerville - North Greenville opened the 2026 season with a thrilling 40-38 road victory over Catawba on Saturday night in Salisbury. The Trailblazers overcame a 21-14 halftime deficit and scored three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to secure the win. 

Kam Montgomery led the way offensively, rushing for 85 yards and four touchdowns while adding 212 yards through the air. Maurice Anderson added 48 rushing yards and a touchdown, while Jonathan Manley caught three passes for 77 yards and a score. Jeremiah Lomax led NGU with nine tackles on the night while Brannon Teamer had six tackles and two stops for a loss. Peyton McBroom picked off a Catawba pass. 

After Catawba took a 32-27 lead early in the fourth quarter, Montgomery answered with a 1-yard touchdown run before breaking loose for a 56-yard touchdown with 5:21 remaining to put North Greenville ahead 40-32. Catawba scored with 38 seconds left but failed to convert the game-tying attempt, allowing the Trailblazers to escape with the victory.. Quincy Haywood secured the win for NGU as he intercepted a Catawba pass in the endzone with just over 30 - seconds left in the game. 

The win over the Indians is NGU's first season opening victory since the 2021 season against Limestone University. Kam Montgomery is now one of just three NGU players in the record books with four rushing touchdowns in a game.

North Greenville will host the University of Charleston on Friday night in Younts Stadium.
