Defense Forces Five Turnovers in Win Over Ferrum

Ferrum, VA – A second half shutout by NGU's defense helped improve the Trailblazers to 4 – 0 on the season Saturday in a 41 – 10 win over Ferrum in the first Conference Carolinas game of the season.

This is the first time North Greenville has been 4 – 0 to open a season since the 2013 season. The Trailblazers went up 21 – 0 in the second quarter with a receiving touchdown from Jackson Parish and a passing TD from Kam Montgomery to Sam Washam. It was Washam's first score of the year and the fifth passing score of the season for Montgomery. Jaiden McDowell also scored a rushing touchdown which gave NGU a 7 – 0 lead in the first quarter.

Ferrum would not lack answers as the Panthers put up 10 – points in the second quarter. A field goal followed by a long touchdown throw leaving two seconds on the first half clock made it 21 – 10. The Panthers would control the ball much of the second half, at one point leading the time of Possession 29-Minutes to just 19 for NGU. The Trailblazers had just two third quarter drives compared to four for the Panthers.

North Greenville's defense came up big for the Trailblazers however pitching a second half shutout for the second consecutive week. Following the Ferrum touchdown in the first half, NGU defenders forced three punts, blocked a field goal, and forced a turnover on downs. The Trailblazers also picked off four Ferrum passes and returned two for a touchdown.

The score remained 21 – 10 until late in the fourth quarter when Omari Cornwall picked off a pass and returned it to the one yard line resulting in NGU's fourth offensive score of the day. Less than a minute later Kaliber Hoey would pick off his third pass in two games but he would return this one for a score to extend the lead to 35 – 10. Less than a minute later, lightning struck again. This time by RJ Glasgow who picked off a pass and took it back 86 – yards the other way for NGU's second defensive score of the season.

Gavin Calhoun led NGU's defense with 10 total tackles on the day. Jamie Downing Jr. and Tyler Washington-Broomfield both had nine tackles. Calhoun also recovered a fumble. Glasgow finished with six tackles, a pick-six and a pass break – up. Brayden Melton was credited with three blocked field goals.
