Joe Benson Tabbed the First Head Coach for North Greenville Flag Football

Tigerville, S.C. – North Greenville University Athletic Director Will Lowrey has announced the hiring of Joe Benson as the inaugural head coach of the Trailblazers' Women's Flag Football program, marking another milestone in the continued growth of NGU Athletics.

"We are excited to have Joe lead our Women's Flag Football program," said Lowrey. "Throughout his career, Joe has demonstrated an ability to lead people, build programs, recruit, and develop young men and women. More importantly, he understands who we are as an institution and shares our commitment to developing student-athletes spiritually, academically, and athletically. Starting a program requires vision, energy, organization, and the ability to build relationships, and I believe Joe possesses those qualities. I'm excited to watch him establish the foundation and culture of Trailblazer Women's Flag Football."

Benson brings more than two decades of military leadership experience, nearly a decade developing young leaders as a Senior Army Instructor, high school coaching experience, and most recently service as Associate Director of Enrollment Operations at North Greenville University. Benson also has family ties to North Greenville as he has two daughters who have graduated from NGU and a third that is currently a junior.

As a high school coach, Benson was charged with launching the first girls soccer program at Clinton High School. Under his leadership, the program advanced to the state playoffs in each of his five seasons at the helm, providing him firsthand experience in building a program from the ground up.

Since joining North Greenville's Admissions Office in 2024, Benson has played an integral role in recruiting prospective students and leading enrollment operations. His experience connecting with students and families, combined with his familiarity with NGU's mission and culture, provides a strong foundation as he begins recruiting the first members of the Trailblazers' Women's Flag Football program.

Prior to arriving at NGU, Benson served as Director of Student Affairs and coached girls soccer at Cambridge Academy after spending nine years as the Senior Army Instructor at Clinton High School.
 
A decorated Army veteran and Bronze Star recipient, Benson served more than 20 years in the United States Army in numerous leadership positions. His military career included commanding soldiers, planning multinational operations, and developing teams in high-pressure environments. Those experiences helped shape a leadership philosophy centered on discipline, teamwork, accountability, service, and personal growth that he will now bring to the Trailblazers' newest athletic program.

North Greenville's inaugural flag football season will be in the Spring of 2028.
