North Charleston – A heart breaker in the season opener for North Greenville Football, falling to Division I Charleston Southern 13 – 10.
The Crusaders outgained the Buccaneers, leaning on the passing attack which finished with 236 – yards and a score. NGU finished the night with 291 – yards of offense. Defensively North Greenville shut down a Buccaneers offense that averaged 20 – points per game last season. The Bucs had 252 – yards total led by a ground attack that finished with 148 yards.
North Greenville started the scoring with a field goal in the first quarter when Collin Karhu knocked one through from 46 – yards. The Crusaders extended the lead to 10 – 0 in the second quarter on a touchdown pass from
Dylan Ramirez to
Dre' Williams for a 39 – yard score.
North Greenville held the Bucs scoreless until the final seconds of the second quarter when they added a field goal to cut the North Greenville lead to seven points. Charleston Southern would not score its only touchdown of the game until the fourth quarter, capping a 10 – point final frame.
The Crusaders took over late in the game with a chance to drive for a tie or to take the lead. North Greenville converted a fourth and 27 as the Crusaders drove down to the three yard line looking take the lead with seconds left.
Dylan Ramirez scrambled and was tackled short of the goal line with eight seconds left but an offsides penalty would end the game following a 10 – second runoff.
North Greenville will hit the road again on week two with a 7 PM kickoff against Newberry College next Saturday.
