Big Plays Propel NGU to Win Over Shorter in Season Finale

Tigerville – North Greenville capped its 2023 season with a conference win over Shorter University, besting the hawks 27 – 17 at Younts Stadium. 
 
The win over Shorter solidifies NGU's best home record since being in the Gulf South, finishing with a 3 – 1 record. The Crusaders also finished 4-4 in league play this season, the best conference record for North Greenville since joining the league. 
 
North Greenville burst out of the gates as Dre' Williams gave the Crusaders an early lead with a 95 – yard kickoff return, the first of the season for North Greenville. Colin Karhu would add a field goal in the first quarter to extend the lead to 10 – 0. NGU extended the lead to 17 – 0 when Corey Watkins broke off a 71 – yard touchdown run before intermission. 
 
North Greenville defenders once again put on a first half clinic, holding the Hawks scoreless in the first and second quarter. The Hawks were forced to punt twice in the first half and also turned the ball over on downs and threw an interception. Shorter also missed a field goal. 
 
The Crusaders staved off a second half surge by the Hawks which scored the first 10 – points of the third quarter to cut the lead to 17 – 10. North Greenville answered with a field goal from Colin Karhu to and put the game away later in the fourth quarter when Dylan Ramirez found Dre' Williams for a 54 – yard touchdown pass. 
 
North Greenville finished with 426 – yards of total offense on Saturday including a season high 276 – yards on the ground. Corey Watkins led North Greenville on the ground, finishing with 241 – yards on just 16 – carries and a touchdown. 
 
Dylan Ramirez threw for 168 – yards and a score. Dre Williams finished with 93 – yards receiving and a score. 
 
North Greenville forced four turnovers on Saturday including three interceptions including two from Kendrick Clark. James Wells led NGU with 10 tackles.
