Box Score Clinton, MS – Timely turnovers on Saturday and the best offensive showing of the season boosted North Greenville to a 41 – 19 win over Mississippi College on Saturday to open Gulf South Conference play.
The Crusaders broke a 6 – 6 tie with the only second quarter score of the game.
EJ Humphrey found pay-dirt from seven yards out making it 13 – 6. North Greenville's first touchdown of the day was also a rushing score, a one yard run from
Semaj Lakin. Lakin's score was the first rushing touchdown of the season for North Greenville.
Lakin scored his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, a run which was also from one yard out. The touchdown made it 20 – 6 at the time. The score came on the heels of a fumble recovery by NGU's defense, the first turnover of the year caused by Crusaders.
De'Iveon Donald was credited with the recovery.
The Choctaws would answer in the third quarter with a score to make it 20 – 13.
North Greenville would score in all three aspects of the game in the fourth quarter. The first touchdown of the final frame came on defense when
Ashton Howard recovered a fumble on the two yardline and scrambled in to the end-zone. The touchdown extended NGU's lead to 27 – 13.
Mississippi College would answer with its final score of the game when a 65 – yard drive was capped off with five yard run. The Choctaw score trimmed North Greenville's lead to eight at 27 – 19. The Crusaders next got a score on special teams when
Fred Billy returned an attempted onside kick 47 – yards for a score. The touchdown is Billy's first career score.
MC's ensuing drive came up empty when
Kendrick Clark secured his first career interception and the first interception of the year for North Greenville defenders.
Corey Watkins put the exclamation point on Saturday's win with a 55 – yard touchdown run for his first score as a Crusader.
