Crusaders sweep Chowan in conference DH

Tigerville – NGU Softball opened Conference Carolinas play on Saturday with a pair of wins over Chowan, sweeping the Hawks 10-3 and 3-2 (8-innings).

Recap (Game One) 
  • North Greenville broke I open early in the first action of the day, plating four runs in the opening frame. Carmen Silvester collected the first RBI of the day on a ground-out that scored Brooklyn Stone while an Aschlyn Hutto's RBI double scored a pair to make it 3-0. A Madison Pride RBI single tacked on the fourth of the inning. 
  • NGU scored three more runs in both the third and sixth innings, answering a three-run sixth from Chowan which at the time, cut North Greenville's lead to just four runs at 7-3. Pride and Stone added RBI base hits in the third along with Josie Reed. Stone added another run scoring knock in the sixth while Claire Gilmore's batted ball in the bottom of the frame resulted in two more runs for NGU. 
 
 Individual
  • Hutto led the Crusaders going 3-3 with two runs and two RBI. Brooklyn Stone was 3-5 with three runs and a pair of RBI. 
  • Claire Gilmore finished the day with two hits and two runs batted in while Madison Pride was 3-4 with two RBI and a run. 
  • Jaelin Griffin earned the win for NGU in the circle, throwing six innings, allowing three runs while striking out 10. 
 
Recap (Game Two)
  • North Greenville scored a run in the second inning on a Taylor Koon ground-out, bringing around Hutto to give NGU an early one-run lead in the second game. From that point, the Crusaders registered just six hits and were held scoreless through the final five innings of regulation. 
  • Chowan was held scoreless until the fifth inning, using an NGU fielding error to even up the score. An RBI double did the damage for the Hawks, scoring to pull even with North Greenville, eventually sending the game to extras. 
  • The Hawks were able to score the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth taking a 2-1 lead without recording an out. North Greenville's defense came through, using a double-play to eventually end the threat and the top of the inning. 
  • The Crusaders got things going quickly in the bottom of the eighth as Clair Gilmore's bunt resulted in a base-hit while moving Brooklyn Stone to third base with no-outs on the board. Stone represented the tying run, eventually scoring on a grounder from Josie Reed who reached on a fielders choice. 
  • The game winner came from the bat of Aschlyn Hutto who placed a fly-ball in to left field, scoring Hailey Wells from third to give NGU the 3-2 win and the sweep. 
Individual 
  • Hutto finished game two with a 2-3 mark, scoring a run and registering an RBI. Clair Gilmore was the only other player for North Greenville with two hits. 
  • Brooklyn Stone was 1-4 with a run-scored while Josie Reed had a hit and an RBI. 
  • Callie Richards pitched seven innings, allowing one run on just two hits while striking out eight. 
  • Bailey Pace would earn the win for NGU after an inning of work. 
 
Next Up 
  • North Greenville will host Barton College on Saturday in a double-header starting at 12 PM.
