Box Score Tigerville – North Greenville fell to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in league play on Saturday after a 34-9 to Delta State in Younts Stadium.
North Greenville answered a Delta State first-quarter field goal with the first touchdown of the game when Donny Baker hit Dre Williams from 31-yards out for his first career receiving touchdown. The point after made it 7-3 with 7:17 left in the first quarter.
The Statesmen added another field goal a few minutes later to cut NGU’s lead to one point at 7-6. North Greenville’s final score of the night came in the second quarter on a special team’s turnover. The Crusaders blocked a DSU punt on the two-yard line which resulted in a safety to make it 9-6 with a few minutes left in the first half.
The Statesmen added a score before halftime to make it 13-9 as the teams headed to intermission. Delta took control of the game in the second half, using an early third-quarter interception and resulting touchdown to take a two-score lead (20-9). Tim Irvin would pick off the pass and return it to the two-yard line where Breck Ruddick would capitalize on the opportunity and run it in.
A big play in the run game to the tune of a 73-yard touchdown and Breck Ruddick touchdown throw to extend the lead to 34-9. The Statesmen finished the night with 435-yards on 72-plays. 224 of those yards came on the ground with 211 yards through the air and a touchdown. Delta tacked on three rushing touchdowns including two from Rico Owens.
Offensively North Greenville got a boost from Dre Williams who returned to action. He ran for 94-yards on 13-carries and finished with three receptions for 46-yards and a score. He was the leading rusher and receiver for NGU.
Chauncy Haney had a big night for North Greenville with a game-high 12-tackles including three for a loss and a sack. Jacob Harper forced a fumble for North Greenville while Eddie Martin picked off a DSU pass. Johnny Worthy had 10-tackles on the night and blocked a punt.
North Greenville will hit the road for the third time in four games next weekend when they travel to West Alabama to take on the Tigers.
