Box Score In their first meeting of the season, North Greenville fell victim to cold shooting as the Tornado bested the Crusaders 46 – 63. Coming off a hot night at Limestone, the Crusaders shot 35% from beyond the arc and only 28% from the field as a whole. Fundamentally the Crusaders played a solid game posting 10 assists while shooting 72% from the free throw line, and out rebounding the Tornado by eight boards.
1st Quarter
The first basket of the game was not scored until the 7:59 mark in the quarter off of a Karen Donehew (Junior) layup. The Crusaders and Tornado then traded baskets back and forth with the lead changing hands at every turn. It was not until the 2:58 mark that King began to make a run; the Tornado started a 15 – 2 run that stifled the Crusaders momentum.
2nd Quarter
The second quarter was tough for the Crusaders who could not have bought a basket during their lowest scoring quarter of the season. The Crusaders did not score until the 4:59 mark off of a Ayano Shelton (Junior) layup. Though the Crusaders had a cold shooting quarter their team defense excelled as the Tornado only managed 12 points in the quarter. Journey Muhammed (Freshman) and Savannah Hughes (Sophomore) rebounded the ball exceptionally well in the quarter.
3rd Quarter
The Crusaders came out hot in the second half beginning the quarter off with a six-point run. Haylee Luttrell (Freshman) started her scoring night with a three-pointer to bring the Crusaders past the 20-point mark. However, the Tornado stifled the momentum and started a small run of their own. After the media timeout the teams traded baskets back and forth until the buzzer with the Crusaders trailing by 17.
4th Quarter
Entering the last quarter of play the Crusaders tried to mount a comeback that brought the lead down to eight. However, at the 6:18 mark the teams began to trade baskets once again. The Tornado finished the game finishing off some late clock layups that inflated the margin.
Individual
Karen Donehew finished the game with a double-double posting 12 points, 12 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Haylee Luttrell scored most of her points in the second half posting 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Ayano Shelton scored 10 points, collected 3 rebounds, a block, and a steal.
Upcoming
The Crusaders are now coming home for a couple games as they are scheduled to take on Erskine College on Wednesday, February 6th at 5:30. Then Angel McGowan and her troops take on Converse College on Saturday, February 9th. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
