Crusaders drop 2017 opener to Barton

Wilson, N.C. – North Greenville opened 2017 with a road loss to Barton College on Tuesday, falling 87-78 to the Bulldogs in Wilson, North Carolina.

North Greenville turned in its best shooting performance to date on Tuesday, banking 31 of 58 shots (53.4%) from the field. The Crusaders were averaging just over 30-percent shooting, heading into Tuesday night’s conference game. NGU also turned in an impressive 7 of 15 performance from the three-point line.

Freshman Karen Donehew led North Greenville with 20-points to go along with four rebounds. Divonnie Powell finished the night with 15-points and a game high eight steals. Cameron Carter added 14-points while Mycala Wolfe scored 12

The Crusaders led the Bulldogs by one point after the first two periods. Barton turned in a strong performance in the third period, scoring 29-points out of halftime to gain a seven-point edge, with the game still in doubt. North Greenville cut the lead to six in the fourth quarter with 3:30 left.

The Bulldogs would come away with the league win though after outscoring NGU 9-6 in the final minutes of the contest to fend off a late comeback by the Crusaders. Barton had an equally impressive night from the field knocking down 50-percent of its shots. The Bulldogs shot just 28.6-percent from three-point range. The Bulldogs got a huge boost from its bench though, as Barton role players scored 36-points compared to just nine for NGU.

The Crusaders fall to 3-7 overall and 0-4 in league play after the loss. NGU will return to action on January 6th against Emmanuel College. The Crusaders and Lions will tipoff at 5:30pm in Franklin Springs, Georgia.
