Tigerville, S.C.—Timisty Nelson led all scorers with 18
points (9-11) and Ashleigh Edwards tacked on 10 of her own, leading the North
Greenville women’s basketball team to an 80-63 win over Convers College on
Thursday night. The win over the Valkyries gives NGU its second straight
conference win, and its first home win of the season.
The Crusaders scored 30 points off of 31 Converse turnovers
while dominating points in paint 48-22. North Greenville’s bench was also solid
scoring 33 points to Converse’s 10. Converse edged the Crusaders on the boards
grabbing 23 rebounds to just 20 for NGU.
North Greenville never trailed in the game after a fast
start out of the blocks. The Crusaders opened the game on an 11-2 run through
the first three minutes of the game giving NGU a lead it would never
relinquish. The Crusaders turned
the pressure up and led by 19 at intermission.
North Greenville led by as many 26 but the Valkyries fought
back and cut NGU’s lead to just 18 with 3:18 left in the game. The Crusaders proved
too much however as NGU cruised to a 17 point victory, improving the squad to
2-8 in Conference Carolinas play and 4-10 overall.
The Valkyries were solid on offense with four players in
double figures, including Samira Gillcrese who charted 16. Kayla Garrett was
next in line with 14 points while Katy Vaughan scored 11 and Ashley Long scored
10. Converse shot just 25.7% from the field 42.9% from the field. North
Greenville ended the night with a 47.9% clip from the field. The Crusaders were
6-18 from beyond the arch.
The Crusaders will rest for a day before welcoming the
Queens University Royals on Saturday afternoon. The Crusaders and royals will
tipoff at 2pm.
